By Jason Montgomery IME 301 Winter 2010 Dr. Rosenkrantz TV Time vs. Study Time By Jason Montgomery IME 301 Winter 2010 Dr. Rosenkrantz Hello, my name is Jason Montgomery and I have prepared an analysis of the amount time watching television versus time studying. As college students we all have very busy lives and I wanted to analyze what I do with my free time. I am married with two children and work so time management is one of the main aspects of my life which needs a lot of focus. Therefore the issue I wanted to investigate is the amount of television I watch versus the amount of time I study.

Data Collection Method Issue: Analyze the amount of television watching to the amount of study time to see if I am using my spare time wisely. Hypothesis: I think the amount of time watching television will be greater than the amount of study time. Data Collection Method My hypothesis is that the amount of television watched will be greater than the amount of time spent studying because I often watch television to relax and enjoy my off time. I have collected my data using the following areas: Date, Day of Week, Study Time per Subject, TV Time. Hopefully this would allow me to evaluate my overall TV time vs. study time and each individual class. Date Day of Week ME 311 IME 301 CE 326 CE 305 TV Time

IME 301 35 0.743 1.067 ME 311 35 0.571 0.884 CE 305 35 0.629 1.262 CE 326 35 0.600 1.030 As you can see from the descriptive statistics from the collected data, my mean TV watching time is greater than my mean study time, at 2.65 hours to 2.54 hours. I have also included the statistics for each course I am taking. You can see from the statistics that I have spent the most study time on IME 301 and CE 305.

You can see the data fit curve corresponds with the mean presented of 2.543 hours. It was shocking to see the amount of 0 hour points in the graph, the total of 15 means that I do not study 43% of days.

This is a bar chart of a daily breakdown showing the total study time and TV time. As you can see I typically study on Mondays and Wednesdays which are the days prior to classes and do not study on the days I have classes. This is probably due to finishing homework on the days prior to class and not studying when I get home from school on the class days. This also shows I did not do any studying on Fridays which is probably detrimental to my studies in that I do not spread out my study time throughout the week and try cramming it into a few days.

Spread out studying over entire week. Hypothesis: I think the amount of time watching television will be greater than the amount of study time. Conclusion: The time spent watching TV is slightly greater than the time spent studying, which agrees with my hypothesis. Ways to Improve: Spread out studying over entire week. Limit TV time to less than or = study time. Create a “Goals” list. As shown previously my hypothesis was that I thought the amount of TV watching would be greater than studying time and the data presented agreed with my hypothesis. After seeing some of the trends in my study and TV habits I have come up with a few ways to improve the efficiency of my study habits. These few items would help me increase my efficiency in studying and hopefully improve my knowledge of the subjects and lower my stress level. This analysis was insightful for me and I hope it was a clear and informative presentation for you, thank you.
