4 Basic Concepts Descriptive Statistics:
5/31/2018 Basic Concepts Descriptive Statistics: Present data using tables and charts; Summarize data by means of numerical measurements and graphs. Inferential Statistics (Sample  Population): Estimate population parameters; Test hypotheses regarding populations; Explore the correlations between variables; Predict behaviours of random variables.

5 5/31/2018 Basic Concepts Unit: A single entity, usually an object or person, whose characteristics are of interest (and to be collected or measured). Population of Units: The complete collection of units about which information is sought. Statistical Population: the set of all measurements corresponding to each unit in the entire population of units about which the information is sought.

6 Basic Concepts Sample: a subset of population.
5/31/2018 Basic Concepts Sample: a subset of population. Sample (Data): a subset of measurements that are actually collected in the course of an investigation. Variable of interest: characteristic of interest, can be collected or measured from the units of population.

7 Basic Concepts Types of Variables: Qualitative vs. quantitative
5/31/2018 Basic Concepts Types of Variables: Qualitative vs. quantitative Numerical vs. categorical Continuous vs. discrete Levels of measurements Nominal Ordinal Scale (interval, ratio)
