Alternative Energy Tide

What are tides Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the combined effects of the gravitational forces exerted by the Moon and the Sun and the rotation of the Earth.

Background Information Tides happen once or twice a day depending where the moon is. Through out the day the water is either falling or rising. The tides can change to 2-40 feet high to low. The most important factor affecting the water movement is the tides. The tides happens for about 6 hours rising and 6 hours falling. Tidal energy was found in 1800s, however modern wave technology began in the 1940s with the experiments of scientist Yoshio Masuda. Funding into wave energy technology has recently increased due to the need for renewable energy sources. The first wave power plant in the world opened in 2008 at the Agucadoura Wave Park in Portugal.

Advantages Of tides This is a renewable Pollution free Tides move constantly throughout the day which provides a content stream of electricity generation capacity.

Disadvantages Of Tides Strong storms and overly salty water can damage the device. Sea Life can get harmed by getting to close to this device.

Pictures of the differences

Other important Information Wave energy Wave energy is energy harnessed from the waves of the ocean. Waves are formed by wind moving across the surface of the ocean. A large amount of energy is stored in waves. Tidal Energy Tidal energy is energy produced by the tides of the ocean. Tides are produced by the pull of gravity from the Moon as well as the spin of the Earth. There is a lot of energy in the movement of that much water. How to get the tides energy? There are 3 ways to get the energy Surface devices- Surface devices are on the surface of the ocean these get the power by the waves moving them up and down. Underwater Devices- Underwater devices are under the water and the devices touch the bottom of the ocean and are connected to long tubes and when waves come these move there turbine and create energy . Reservoir- These take advantage of the waves and move water in a reservoir on the coastline. As water moves back out into the ocean it is forced down a tube and turns the blades of turbine. The turbine then converts the energy into electricity. Turbines a machine for producing continuous power in which a wheel or rotor, typically fitted with vanes, is made to revolve by a fast-moving flow of water, steam, gas, air, or other fluid.

Alternative energy Hydroelectricity

What is Hydroelectricity Hydroelectricity is the term referring to electricity generated by hydropower; the production of electrical power through the use of the gravitational force of falling or flowing water.

Background Information In late 1800 the first hydroelectric plant was in the U.S and put in niagara falls. This helped Niagara Falls produce energy. Canada has the largest producer of hydropower and the U.S is the second largest. This Idea came from water wheels and got expanded into something huge. In the U.S the largest Hydroelectricity is Grand Coulee Dam in Washington Lester Allan Pelton discovered hydroelectricity

Advantages of Hydroelectricity Hydroelectricity Is a clean and environmentally friendly. There are no gases burned so theres no harmful toxic released in the environment. Four power plants and 33 generators have enough energy for two million homes. Engineers Can control the flow of water

Disadvantages of Hydroelectricity Hydroelectricity effects the wildlife.Especially species that live in the water. This can be dangerous for humans activities in the water. You might be in a canoe and the current might push you into the hydroelectric plant. The water has to be moving in order for hydroelectric plant to work.

Picture of Hydroelectricity

Other Important Information Hydro means water How efficient Hydropower is the most energy efficient power generator. Currently, hydropower is capable of converting 90% of the available energy into electricity. This can be compared to the most efficient fossil fuel plants, which are only 60% efficient.

My Opinion on Tides and hydroelectricity I think both these energy sources are a fabulous way of having a friendly environment. I think that there are going to be disadvantages of anything in the world and that this is pretty good compared to other things in this world. There is so much pollution and waste in the world so I think that things like these two should be used more often.
