What kind of book do you think this is? Autobiography

Today we will learn about… How authors write based on their own experiences. 2. Describing our neighborhood.

Speed Reading: Round One How Cleary used her own life experiences Which street did Cleary live on? What did the boys do on her street? Why did she use the name Klickitat St? Where did ‘Ribsy’ get his name from? 5. What transport was on Cleary’s street ?

Speed Reading: Round Two Vocabulary : Find a word that means… The time in your life when you’re a child. The area you live in. To make fun of someone. To make you want to do something. 5. Form of transport, like a car.

What can we draw from Cleary’s neighbourhood? Describe her neighbourhood by thinking of the “W” words + how. Where is it? Who lives there? What do people do there? What usual and unusual things can you see there? What adjectives describe the neighborhood? How do people get around? We might also ask: Why do people live in that neighborhood? What makes this neighbourhood special? When do people have celebrations or get together as a community?

Where is your neighborhood? Give specific details. We already know that You live in Hong Kong!

What do people do there? What kinds of work do people do?

What exercise are these people doing?

What is this man doing?

What usual and unusual things are in your neighborhood? Does this look like a place near you?

Think of specific details

Does it have a shopping centre? What kinds of shops are inside the shopping centre?

Are there any restaurants? What type of food do they serve?

Think about the small details too. What are these? Who usually sits here? What do they do when they are sitting here?

What makes it attractive? Think about the special features that have been added to make your surroundings more cheerful.

What adjectives describe it? How might you describe this neighbourhood?

How do people get around in this neighbourhood? There are a few different ‘modes of transport’ here. Can you name them?

Example I live in Sai Kung. It is in the eastern New Territories. It is an old fishing village but nowadays people have many different jobs there. People work in restaurants and other service industries. Lots of residents commute to work in the city. There are many teachers there too. If you wake up early in the morning, you can see older people doing tai chi on the waterfront. At the weekend, tourists like to parade their dogs beside the water. Some of the dogs are dressed up in colourful clothing and some of them are pushed along in prams! You may also see domestic helpers gathering there. They like to sing, dance, chat and share food together. Most of the people that live in Sai Kung get around on foot or by bicycle. If they want to travel into the city, they need to use buses or minibuses. It is a peaceful place to live during the week. The sound of the sea and the friendliness of the people make it a relaxing place to live. I think that most people choose to live there either because of their work or because they want to stay in a quiet place close to the countryside. This is what makes it special for me.
