CIVIC AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT The Civic and Community Engagement Office inspires lives of active citizenship and social responsibility in a diverse and complex society and connects students, faculty, staff, and community partners through reciprocal curricular and co-curricular community-engaged learning to address identified community needs. 

WHAT IS SERVICE-LEARNING? A form of active learning that links learning in the classroom with activities that students participate in to address the needs of the surrounding community. Last year 1,763 students completed 39,069 hours of service through 105 service-learning courses

GETTING STARTED EXPECTATIONS When calling your contact or arriving at the site for the first time: Introduce yourself Identify the reason you are calling (or are present) Identify the service-learning course and professor Indicate how many hours you are required to complete for the course Know the course’s objective for your service-learning

Address issues promptly (with supervisor, faculty, CCE staff) WHAT IS EXPECTED OF YOU Be prompt and positive at the organization Be open to learning about cultures and lifestyles that are different than your own Be respectful Communicate with your supervisor if you are unable to make your scheduled time Address issues promptly (with supervisor, faculty, CCE staff) Remember, you are representing SUNY Buffalo State

SERVICE LOG Keep an accurate record of your service hours Have the community agency or staff verify your hours and sign your service log Sign and return to your professor If the professor is requiring that the students track their hours, the use of a service log can be very helpful. Many organizations have adopted this form or something similar so speak with your contact at the organization about their policies as well.

SAFETY REMINDERS Familiarize yourself with the new area ahead of time Travel with a buddy Carry only what you need Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return Always lock your doors and leave a light on Park or walk in well-lit areas Never leave valuables in plain sight If you become a victim of a crime call 911 (on-campus call 716-878-6333) It’s important to always keep in mind safety while on campus, at home, or in the community.

To find a service-learning designated course when scheduling courses for the next semester, choose one of the three choices under the “Instructional Method” tab.
