Unit 2, Lesson 3: Separation Methods (Part 1)

Hand Separation The separation of a mechanical mixture by hand or by the use of a magnet.

Filtration The separation of a mechanical mixture composed of a liquid and an un-dissolved solid. After separation, the liquid is called the filtrate and the solid is called the residue.

Evaporation The separation of a solution by boiling off a liquid, leaving a solid behind.

Brain Break!

Distillation Separation of a solution by boiling off a liquid, then condensing it in a separate container, leaving the other substance (liquid or solid) behind.

Solvent Extraction Separation of a mechanical mixture by dissolving one solid in a liquid and leaving the other behind, OR Separation of a solution by adding an immiscible liquid that dissolves one component of the solution but not the other.
