1. Describe Israel’s GEOGRAPHY Size small country surrounded by enemies ~70 miles wide x ~200 miles long

Location E of Med. Sea, S of Lebanon, N of Egypt Center of the Middle East

Landforms Most land is sea level Some fertile coastal plains Negev Desert in south Some forests and mts

Water bodies Dead Sea lowest point on Earth, highest salt content Jordan River, fresh H2O, causes conflict Sea of Galilee Med coast

Climate Mostly desert Small part in north is Mediterranean Similar to southern USA

2. Jerusalem is sacred to 3 religions Judaism Christianity Islam https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9zujnEd--g

JUDAISM The Wailing Wall/Western Wall Is part of what is left from the retaining wall of the 2nd Jewish Temple

CHRISTIANITY Church of the Holy Sepulchre Site where Christ was crucified and buried

ISLAM Dome of the Rock Mosque built over the rock where Muhammad was said to have gone to Heaven to talk with God and returned

3. Diaspora & Zionism Diaspora is the scattering of the Jewish people after the Romans conquered Palestine in 135 CE Zionism is the national movement in the 1800s calling the Jews to establish a homeland These led to the creation of modern day Israel because after all of the scattering and persecution they faced they wanted a safe place to live where they could practice their religion together in the land they believe was given to them by God.

Who created Israel and WHY? Diaspora = scattering of Jews after Israel was conquered by Romans in 135CE Zionism = nationalist movement calling for Jews to establish a homeland, began in Europe in late 1800s Holocaust = persecution of Jews during WW2, 6 million killed United Nations divided Palestine in 1947 into 2 parts: Palestine & Israel, fighting breaks out, 1948 Israel declares itself an independent country.

United Nations creates Israel

4. Israeli PEOPLE 7+ MILLION Most live in urban areas Israeli Jews = 80% Hard working, strong, educated, diverse, protective, modern & traditional Palestinian Arabs/Muslims & Christians = 20% Languages: Hebrew, Arabic, English High literacy rate and life expectancy BOTH groups (J & M) view this land as “THEIR HOMELAND”…given to them by God.

5. Israel’s ECONOMY Technologically advanced market economy, modern, diverse, developed country High food production with advanced irrigation Per capita GDP ~ $36,000 Most people work in service industries (level 3 & 4) Industries include: high tech stuff, export cut diamonds, tourism, sophisticated irrigation systems

Some live on a Kibbutz Cooperative settlements… closest thing in world to communism ~250 of them in Israel Large farm with many families Live & work together and share profits Housing, meals, education, healthcare provided

6. Who lives where? Golan Hts: (Syria) Arabs, Druze, Israeli settlements, live here against UN resolution, provides safety from terrorists & fresh H20 West Bank & Gaza: (Jordan & Egypt) Mostly Palestinians live here, building of more Israeli settlements cause conflict (2005 Gaza under Palestinian control) E.Jerusalem: divided into areas for 3 religions & ethnicity

7. Cause of conflict Conflict is about who owns/controls the land of Israel. Both groups believe the land was given to them by God. Currently, Israel governs the land. Palestinians believe the land was wrongly taken away from them by the UN in 1948. Israelis have continued to conquer more land and build more settlements on land that does not belong to them. Palestinians protest against this. Terrorist attacks prevail to get land and country rights back for the Palestinians.

8. Israel’s strong military Israel needs a strong military because it is surrounded by enemies. It needs to protect itself from enemy neighbor attacks and terrorism. Everyone serves in the military. Most people are armed.

9. USA & ISRAEL SIMILARITIES Allies Industrialized Educated people Freedom of religion Democratic government High per capita GDP & strong economy Most people work in service industries Powerful military Speak English Terrorism issues

Most industrialized in M.E. WHY? Educated people immigrated (Zionism) Strong desire to succeed Many skilled people $ aid from USA Ideal trade location Developed high tech industries

Government Parliamentary Democracy Voting age 18 Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu This is the leader with the political power! Palestinian leader: Mahmoud Abbas PLO leader of Hamas a terrorist organization

9. USA & ISRAEL DIFFERENCES Israel is much smaller Israel has fewer resources Dominant language = Hebrew Dominant religion = Jewish “occupied territories” More conflict in Israel Thousands of years of history More terrorist attacks Location & climate Everyone serves in the military
