The Evolution of Building Methods Traditional Methods This is developed from the common and well known methods developed locally. It depends on handcraft & labor skill (such as wood construction techniques & brick work). Building design and building implementation are the same process. The building is not designed by a professional but built according to methods learned and passed on through generations. 1

The Evolution of Building Methods Traditional Method Large proportion of the building construction and building components collection done on or near the site. The work organization and its nature is well known by the craftsmen and the builders so that work could be done with less detailed information. Extensive and detailed plans are not required This method is more suitable for small contracts such as houses. 3

The Evolution of Building Methods Conventional Modern Methods Traditional building method changes with the introduction of new materials and new technology. This building method is a mixture of the traditional method in terms of its dependence on handcraft & labor skill and the new constructional method resulted from the use of new materials and technologies. 7

The Evolution of Building Methods Conventional modern Methods This method is used in larger projects and employs more expensive equipment, machinery and installation techniques than traditional methods. It is less flexible than the traditional method because: Connected with the use of a large number of machines Large projects needed larger investments Detailed documents and contracts are involved. 9

The Evolution of Building Methods Modern Building Methods Reasons for the evolution of modern techniques: Increase in size and complexity of buildings and the accompanying complexity in the way of construction techniques. Increase in the demand for various types of buildings. An increase in the number of different professions involved in design and construction. The need to meet budgets and schedules due to modern financing requirements. 12

The Evolution of Building Methods Modern Building Methods Modern construction requires an integrated approach for both the design and production, resulting in continuity in all phases of work. Here work must be planned and scheduled so that the process of building will be in the form of ongoing activity without delays or stoppages. 16

The Evolution of Building Methods Modern Building Methods Some of the means needed to achieve modern methods are: Standardization. Pre-manufacturing or pre-cast of building component. Use of mechanical equipment. The work should be designed with no overlap in the work of different professions Thinking of the product during design process. 18

The Evolution of Building Methods Closed (Proprietary) building systems All building components are designed and produced in the factory by a single manufacturer or vendor, then combined or fixed in place at the building site. No part of certain building systems can be used with other systems parts. (that is why it is called closed system) Mostly used in schools and housing projects, and a few other building types. 22

There is a complete integration and coordination between the factory product and the site work to ensure the continuation of work throughout the assembly period. 23

The Evolution of Building Methods Closed (Proprietary) Building Systems The economical success of the method depends on efficiency of work organization more than the method of producing building parts. This method is efficient and economical when the production is in large-scale and meets large market demand significantly. 24

Building Methods Open System building This system differs from the closed system: Production of the components is not limited to one product or manufacturer. Each component is subject to replacement by components made by another manufacturer. Gives more flexibility and freedom in design and components. Used with more building types. The design and implementation or product is one process. 25
