30 feet

Signals with carbon monoxide detectors transmitted to a fire alarm system shall be permitted to be _____________________________ signals.

Supervisory

When a supervising station receives a trouble signal they must dispatch personnel with in ________ hours to initiate maintenance, if necessary.

4 hours

Complete records of all signals received by a supervising station shall be kept for a period of ________________.

1 year

A type public alarm system shall be required where the number of all alarms required to be retransmitted exceeds _____________ per year.

A means to disconnect all circuit conductors inside a building protected by a public alarm system shall be provided but access shall be allowed to the building owner and the authority having jurisdiction. True or False

False AHJ only

Central Station Operator Qualifications Must be qualified Factory trained, certification acceptable to AHJ, locally licensed or other training approved by AHJ

10.5 Power Supplies All power supplies shall be installed according to NEC Fire alarm shall have two reliable power supplies Primary Secondary

NEW Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) Must meet NFPA 111 Must be supplied by dedicated branch circuit UPS failure shall result in a trouble signal

Primary Power Supply Must be one of the following Light and power service circuit Engine driven generator when trained person is always on duty Engine driven generator for cogeneration with power service Location of disconnecting means identified at control unit Dedicated branch circuit, marked red and FIRE ALARM CIRCUIT

Disconnecting means accessible to authorized personnel only Overcurrent protection shall be provided for ungrounded conductors

Secondary Power Supply Fire Alarm Systems Storage battery or automatic starting generator Four hour battery charge Secondary circuits proving power to control unit and are not integral shall be protected against physical damage

Secondary Power Supply for Supervising Station Must be one of the following: Storage Batteries Automatic starting generator with four hour storage battery Dedicated branch circuit of multiple generators

Capacity of Secondary Power Supply 24 hours in quiescent load At the end of that period capable of 5 minutes of alarm operation Batteries shall include 20% safety margin Supervising stations, 24 hours of normal operation

Continuity of Power Supplies Protected Premises power to secondary supply shall automatically switch within 10 seconds Supervising Station power to secondary supply shall automatically switch within 60 seconds No interruption or delay in signals shall exceed 10 seconds UPS are allowed to provide power for transfer Positive means to disconnect input and output provided so that power is continuous

Power supplies for remotely located alarm systems shall meet all the previous requirements.

Storage Batteries Marked with the month and year of manufacture Mounted securely and protected from damage Gasses not affect other equipment Installed according to NEC Location identified at control unit unless they are adjacent Must be recharged within 48 hours of discharge Supervising stations: Must maintain spare parts so that batteries can be restored or replaced prior to losing ½ their capacity Charging circuits supervised and initiate trouble signal upon failure

Generators Installed in an approved manner According to NEC Article 700 and NFPA 110, Type 10, Class 24, Level 1 system for protected premises NFPA 110, Type 60, Class 24, Level 2 system for supervising station automatic starting generators NFPA 110, Type M, Class 24, Level system for supervising station manual starting generators

Fuel Store adequate supply for 6 months of required testing plus the 24 hr/ 5 minute rule If a reliable source of supply is available with a 2 hour notice, a 12 hour supply of fuel stored is allowed

10.6 Signal Priority ECS signals can be elevated by evaluation through risk analysis to precedence over all other signals Fire alarm signals Emergency Mass Notification Signals Hold Up Alarms Supervisory Signals Trouble Signals

10.7 Distinctive Signals Priority alarms, fire alarms, supervisory and trouble signals shall be distinctive and descriptively annunciated. Audible signals can not sound like any similar device used in the same area. Carbon Monoxide Sensors for example At the control unit this can be done by the same audible alarm with a supplemental textual device

10.8 ECS Priority Signals Must be visible indication automatically with in 10 seconds at the fire alarm control unit or other designated location

10.9 Fire Alarm Signals Fire alarm signals shall be unique Notification appliances shall activate within 10 seconds of an initiating device activation Coded alarm signal shall consist of 3 rounds of 3 impulses

10.10 Deactivation of Signals Alarms Visual and audible must be simultaneously deactivated Key operated or equivalent protection Subsequent activation of another circuit initiating device must restart alarm If left in off position must initiate a trouble signal

10.11 Deactivation of Supervisory Signal Coded: 2 complete rounds Restoral at least 1 complete round Self restoring and Latching supervisory signals indicated within 90 seconds Silencing allowed by authorized personnel Visual continues Left in off position shall cause a trouble signal

10.12 Trouble Signals Trouble signals shall be indicated with in 200 seconds Intermittent signal must sound at least every 10 seconds Can be silenced Must resound every 24 hours Sound until manually silenced Retransmitted to supervisory station

10.14 Performance and Limitations Equipment shall be able to operate at 85% if nameplate voltage Equipment shall be able to operate at 110% of nameplate voltage Equipment shall operate at temperatures of 32 – 120 degrees F. Equipment shall be able to operate at 85% humidity and 86 degrees F.

10.15 Automatic smoke detectors must be provided at the location of all control equipment, NAC power extenders and supervising station transmitting equipment For ceilings less 15 or less, located on a ceiling or wall with in 21 feet of control unit For ceilings over 15, located on the wall above the control unit within 6 of top
