Summarizing a poem

I can use key details to summarize a poem.

How can summarizing help me better understand a poem?

I am going to show it until it gets to the “Big 5.” I don’t think that will help with summarizing a poem. I am also going to discuss their prior knowledge, since we have taught summarizing before. I am going to link summary of a story and summary of a poem.

Summarizing poetry easy as 1,2,3! Before discussing this slide, I will open by reading a poem. You can read any poem.

Congratulations. Today is your day. You're off to Great Places Congratulations! Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away! You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go. You'll look up and down streets. Look 'em over with care. About some you will say, 'I don't choose to go there.' With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet, you're too smart to go down any not-so-good street. What is happening in this stanza? A person has the chance to go anywhere and do anything because they are prepared for the next step.

What is happening in this stanza? And you may not find any you'll want to go down. In that case, of course, you'll head straight out of town. It's opener there in the wide open air. Out there things can happen and frequently do to people as brainy and footsy as you. And then things start to happen, don't worry. Don't stew. Just go right along. You'll start happening too. OH! THE PLACES YOU'LL GO! What is happening in this stanza? The choice is yours on what happens next, but don’t be nervous.

What is the summary of the poem? Stanza 1-A person has the chance to go anywhere and do anything because they are prepared for the next step. Stanza 2-The choice is yours on what happens next, but don’t be nervous. Summary Life is changing and that is okay. You are prepared for what happens next. Enjoy the adventure.

Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly. What is being compared in this stanza? Life without dreams is being compared to a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. What does that mean? A person who lets go of dreams/gives up on dreams is living life without a purpose. What is the main idea of this stanza? Dreams are important to make life have meaning.

Hold fast to dreams For when dreams go Life is a barren field Frozen with snow. What is being compared in this stanza? Life when a person stops dreaming is being compared to a barren (no produce) field frozen with snow. What does that mean? If a person does not have a dream, he/she is not living life to its fullest. What is the main idea of this stanza? Dreams make life have meaning.

Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly. For when dreams go Life is a barren field Frozen with snow. What is the summary of this poem? Stanza 1- Dreams are important to make life have meaning. Stanza 2- Dreams make life have meaning. Summary- Everyone should have and hold on to their dreams to make life worth living.

Group activity You will be assigned to a group of 3. With your group, you will summarize a poem. When everyone has finished, we will rotate poems. After three rotations, we will come back together and discuss the poems. I have 21 students, so I would have 7 groups of 3. My goal is to allow each group to summarize at least 3 poems during this time. This activity can be as long or short as you would like. We will come back together after 3 rotations and discuss the 7 poems before doing one by themselves.

Assessment example Dskmekm This is the first two stanzas of the CASE benchmark. There are no summarize of poem questions, so I made this one up. I am using it so we know we are assessing on a 5th grade leveled text.
