THE POET DOES NOT NECESSARILY WRITE WHAT HAPPENED, OR THE FEELING HE/SHE HAD AT A TIME IN THE PAST, BUT SOMETHING NEW THAT IS CREATED IN WORDS TO TELL THE TRUTH OF WHAT HAPPENED AND HOW HE/SHE FELT ABOUT IT.

4. A poem is more than a metaphor…
A strong, memorable metaphor or simile is more than just the difference between something literal and something figurative.
It’s about writing or saying something original.
As creators of poetry, how can you write or say something in a way that no one else has?
Do you ever feel like a plastic bag Drifting through the wind Wanting to start again Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin Like a house of cards One blow from caving in…

Study the poem “A Fine Head of Lettuce” Who is the speaker?
How many stanzas does the poem have? How many lines per stanza?
What words rhyme? Is there a pattern (rhyme scheme)? What verbal joke (pun) do you find in the last line?
