Organ Systems Digestive Skeletal System System Urinary System Nervous System Organ Systems Respiratory system New Life Keeping Healthy Circulatory system

Organ Systems Digestive System Skeletal System Urinary System Nervous System Organ Systems Respiratory system New Life Keeping Healthy Circulatory system

Learning Intention To learn about the different types of teeth and their function To understand and recognise the positioning of teeth in different animals To be able to describe the role of teeth in digestion

Discuss Why do we have teeth? Are they all the same; explain?

Teeth 4 different types of teeth Different shapes for different jobs (hammer vs pliers) Names?

These are cutting teeth used for cutting and biting off pieces of food Incisors These are cutting teeth used for cutting and biting off pieces of food

These are long and sharp teeth that are used to hold and tear at food Canines These are long and sharp teeth that are used to hold and tear at food

These teeth are used to crush and grind soft food Premolars These teeth are used to crush and grind soft food

These teeth are used for chewing and grinding hard food Molars These teeth are used for chewing and grinding hard food

Cut and stick

Questions Label the diagram of the mouth Copy and complete the sentences below: ______ are for cutting and biting off pieces of food. _______ are long and sharp teeth that are used to hold and tear at food. _______ are used to crush and grind soft food ________are used for chewing and grinding hard food

Teeth Herbivore, Carnivore, Omnivore Will they all have the same teeth; discuss and explain.

Herbivore Incisors to bite leaves Molars to grind them

Carnivore Sharp Canines to KILL other animals and tear the flesh

Omnivores

Why is it important we chew our food?

Mechanical Digestion Our teeth are involved in the mechanical breakdown of the food we eat; this is the first stage of the digestion process. Chewing breaks up large chunks of food into smaller chunks which provides a LARGER SURFACE AREA for the next stage of digestion (chemical).

Plenary Gently bite down on the polystyrene and try to identify each type of tooth

Print to stick in jotters and label
