Action Transitive verbs are followed by an object that receives the action Ex: Maia sketched the dragon. Ex: Ethan calls the bunnies. Intransitive verbs are not followed by an object. Ex: Jason skated. Ex: Leslie napped. Ex: Hunter skipped around school
State of Being “To be” verbs – is, am, are, was, were, be, being, been Ex: Henry was a king. Ex: You are freshmen. Ex: We were happy.
State of Being Linking verbs – can be replaced by a form of “to be” without significantly changing the meaning of the sentence Usual linking verbs: seem, taste, smell, look, sound, feel, become, appear, remain, turn, grow Ex: The cookie tasted yummy. Ex: The cookie grew stale. Ex: Cookies sounded good when you suggested them. Ex: I feel hungry.
WATCH OUT Sometimes action verbs look like linking verbs! If you can’t replace the word with a “to be” verb then it is action! Ex: The farmer grew corn. Ex: The puppy tasted the cookie. Ex: The pirate sounded the alarm.
Verb Phrases Verbs sometimes appear in phrases. When you see a verb phrase the LAST word determines what kind of verb it is. This last word is called the main verb The words before are helping verbs Main word determines the catagory
Helping Verbs – express shades of meaning and tenses Modal – shall, should, will, would, can, could, may, might, must, have to, had to, ought to Forms of have – has, have, had Forms of be – is, am, are, was, were, be, being, been Forms of do – does, do, did (forms of do are special) Ex: Enkidu should have been eating with the shepherds
