Definition The order in which you perform operations can affect the value of an expression. To avoid confusion, mathematicians have agreed on an order of operations. Multiply and divide first. Then add and subtract.

Definition To simplify a numerical expression, you use the order of operations and replace the expression with the simplest name for its value.

Key Concepts Order of Operations Work inside Grouping symbols. Multiply and Divide in order from left to right. Add and subtract in order from left to right.

Example In your Notebook Simplify 4 + 15 ÷ 3.

Practice In your Notebook Simplify 12 ÷ 3 – 1 Simplify 10 – 1 · 7

Note Page Examples 8 – 2 • 2 12 ÷ 3 – 1 • 2 + 1

Quick Check (Note Page) 2 + 5 x 3 12 ÷ 3 – 1 10 – 1 • 7

Practice Simplify 3 • 5 − 8 ÷ 4 + 6

Practice Simplify 4 – 1 · 2 + 6 ÷ 3 Simplify 5 + 6 · 4 ÷ 3 – 1

Rules Order of Operations Work inside grouping symbols Exponents Multiply and divide in order from left to right. Add and subtract in order from left to right.

Grouping Symbols Start with the innermost grouping symbol when there is more than one level of grouping symbols. Levels of Grouping Symbols { [ ( ) ] } Brackets Braces Parenthesis

Examples Simplify 20 – 3 [(5 + 2) – 1]

Quick Check (NP) 4 – 1 • 2 + 6 ÷ 3 5 + 6 • 4 ÷ 3 – 1 2 [(13 – 4) ÷ 3] 1 + 10 −2 4
