Presentation transcript:

Developmental Psychology Aims to explain growth, change and consistency though the lifespan Looks at how thinking, feeling, and behaviour change throughout a person’s life. Main focus upon development during childhood, as this is the period during an individual's lifespan when the most change occurs.

Developmental Psychology To describe development it is necessary to focus both on… Typical patterns of change (normative development) Individual variations in patterns of change (i.e. idiographic development).

Developmental psychology questions… Is there a predictable pattern individuals follow regarding thought and language and social development? Do children go through gradual changes or are they abrupt changes?

Normative development Continual Change is gradual Discontinuity development Abrupt ‘Stages’ (developmental periods of life) All people go through the same stages, in the same order, but not necessarily at the same rate Are we more Nature or Nurture? A great insight is twin and adoptive studies

Bowlby Piaget Vygotsky Stress the fundamental role of social interaction in the development of cognition. Children come into the world biologically pre-programmed to form attachments. Piaget Children think differently than adults, and stated they go through 4 universal stages of cognitive development. Vygotsky

Kohlberg 1968 What is moral development? The process throught which children develop proper attitudes and behaviors toward other people in society, based on social and cultural norms, rules, and laws.

Look at the dilemma’s from before half term…

In the middle of your poster(s), identify the similarities and differences between each study!

Key question How does each study relate to the key theme? And how does each study relate to the area of psychology its placed within
