A Little Chocolate May Do the Heart Good European Heart Journal March 30, 2010

Chocolate and Heart Health In the study, people who ate the most chocolate (7.5 g/day) had lower blood pressure and were 39% less likely to have a heart attack than those who ate the least (1.7 g/day). Heart Attack Risk (RR) When eating chocolate, choose dark chocolate. Just eat a small amount of chocolate daily; about 1/3 ounce in this study showed a 39% decrease in heart attack risk. Don’t add extra calories that may contribute to overweight. Replace other calories or treats you may eat with the chocolate, or add extra exercise calories. A one-mile walk would be equivalent to the calories in 0.3 ounces of chocolate. Source: European Heart Journal. March 30, 2010. n=19,357 people, 10-year study European Heart Journal. March 30, 2010.

Eating Chocolate Choose dark chocolate. 7 grams of chocolate is equivalent to one small square or about 0.3 ounces a day. Eating chocolate should not add extra calories. It should take the place of other treats or be worked off with exercise. It’s the cocoa in the chocolate that is beneficial, not the fat or sugar. When eating chocolate, choose dark chocolate.
