What caused the rise in popularity of the Populist Party? Notes #28

During the late 1800s, an overproduction of farm crops in the U. S During the late 1800s, an overproduction of farm crops in the U.S. was causing their prices to fall.

To help solve this problem, farmers wanted the U. S To help solve this problem, farmers wanted the U.S. government to increase the money supply.

Farmers supported free and unlimited coinage of silver (“free silver”) because they believed it would result in higher prices for farm crops.

Populist Party Convention (1890) The Populist Party was a political party in the U.S. that proposed reforms for farmers (such as “free silver”), which caused its rise in popularity by the 1890s. Populist Party Convention (1890)

The Populist Party also proposed other economic and political reforms, such as the graduated income tax or the direct election of senators.

Despite never winning a presidential election, the Populist Party was important for proposing ideas that later became laws in the U.S. William Jennings Bryan (Populist) Election of 1896 William McKinley 
