Food Quality Protection Act of 1996 (FQPA) Carly Kutschke pd.3

Food Quality Protection Act of 1996 -Legislation similar to the FQPA was drafted and presented to Congress in 1995 but was never acted on. In 1996, the political landscape had changed and new pressures to act on pesticide control reform surfaced. -It was passed unanimously by Congress in 1996 and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on August 3, 1996 -National

Food Quality Protection Act 1996 -The FQPA standardized the way the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would manage the use of pesticides and amended the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act and the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act. -mandates a single, health-based standard for all pesticides in all foods -provides special protections for infants and children -expedites approval of safer pesticides -creates incentives for the development and maintenance of effective crop protection tools for American farmers -requires periodic re-evaluation of pesticide registrations and tolerances to ensure that the scientific data supporting pesticide registrations will remain up to date in the future

Food Quality Protection Act 1996 -The EPA is responsible for regulation and enforcement
