2. The Safe Water Drinking Act
The bill was first drafted in It’s goal was to protect public drinking water supplies throughout the nation.
Under the Safe Drinking Water Act, the EPA sets standards for drinking water quality in the United States and implements a variety of technical and financial programs to ensure drinking water safety.

3. Amendments
In 1986, after 12 years, Congress passed the first set of amendments to the bill. They were signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on June 19.
The 1996 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act require that EPA conduct risk and cost assessment peer-reviewed science, when developing water standards.
