Function: Set tolerance levels of active, toxic, and unavoidable ingredients and pesticides used on food crops (both domestic and imports). In 1954, it was amended to include raw agriculture commodities. In 1958, it was once again amended to include the Delaney Clause, which eliminated the addition of food additives that have been seen to cause cancer.
Pesticide chemical ingredients are classified as either active or inert, and are registered with the EPA. Once registered, a tolerance level is set based on the ingredients. The main function of the FFDCA was to protect consumers from harmful chemicals used on their food products.
