American Indians Study Guide Region Food Shelter Clothing Environment Arctic seals caribou whales igloo fur animals skins (seal) cold and icy Northwest hunted, fished, gathered fruits and berries large plank houses made from wood clothes made from cedar bark ocean, rivers, forests Southwest grew crops such as corn and beans pueblo cotton desert Plains buffalo and any other animals they could hunt tepees Grass houses buffalo hide open glass lands Northeast Farmed, hunted, gathered, and fished Longhouses deer skin oceans, rivers, forests Southeast used what they found in nature to build different types of homes

Regions Arctic Plains Northwest Northeast Southeast Southwest American Indians had to obtain (get) their food, clothing, and shelter from their environment. American Indians in the Plains region had to move often in search of buffalo and other animals. They did not have permanent homes. American Indians continue to contribute (give) to American culture through artwork, literature, and dance.
