Presentation transcript:

5 Forms of Energy Energy: The ability to do work, or make things move. Law of Conservation of Energy: Energy cannot be created or destroyed it can only be transferred or transformed (change form). 1

Mechanical Energy Energy in the form of motion (KE), or soon to be in motion because of position, or shape. (GPE or EPE) Sound is this as air particles move.

Nuclear Energy Energy stored in the nucleus of an atom. Fission – the splitting of a nucleus releasing energy. Nuclear power plants. Fusion – the joining of two nuclei to form one releases energy. Stars

Chemical Energy Energy stored in chemical bonds. When bonds between atoms are broken energy is released. Chemical Reaction. Food, fuels, matches, batteries. C6H12O6 → CO2 + H2O + energy

Electromagnetic Energy Waves Energy that travels through space in waves caused by vibrating electric charge. Light, Microwaves, Infrared, Ultraviolet, radiowaves, x-rays, gamma rays. Caused by moving electrons. Magnetism Can do work or create electricity Electricity

Thermal Energy Energy in the motion of particles. Thermal energy is the total energy in the particles of an object. Heat is the transfer of thermal energy. Remember the kinetic theory of matter. Faster motion = higher energy More particles = higher energy Slower motion = less energy Fewer particles =less energy

Multiple Transformations A series of energy transformations must occur for you to ride your bike. What are the forms of energy involved in each transformation?
