Writing a Personal Narrative

What is a Personal Narrative? A personal narrative is a true story about the writer’s life. It tells the reader about a thing that happened to the writer.

Personal Narrative Writing Assignment Write about a happy time in your life . Be sure to begin your paragraph with a topic sentence that tells the reader what happened. Then include the details of the story in the sentences that follow. Remember to use the checklist to check your writing.

Checklist  I have an introduction, a body and a conclusion.  I have a title.  I have an introduction, a body and a conclusion.  I have used interesting vocabulary.  I have double spaced my writing.  I have indented or left an extra space at the beginning of a paragraph.  I wrote in the past tense because I wrote about something that has already happened.  I proofread my first draft and used a red pen and editing marks to fix any mistakes I made.  I read my first draft out loud to a parent or grandparent.  I did the writing to the best of my abilities.  My writing is fun, interesting and acceptable for anyone to read

What to do when writing a Personal Narrative What important things happen. Use paragraphs. Use sequence words like “first”, “then”, “next” and “finally”. Use words like “I”, “me”, and “my”. Show your feelings.

Paragraphs We want to use paragraphs when we write. A paragraph is a group of sentences about the same thing. One piece of writing usually has more than one paragraph.

Introduction or Topic Sentences A topic sentence is a sentence that tells what you are writing about. Your story should have a topic sentence at the very beginning. Each paragraph should also have a topic sentence that tells what the paragraph is about.
