4 Warm-up Make notes about three important events or experiences in your life. describe each event Why was it important? How did it change you? What’s happening in the picture? How do you know? What do the pictures have in common?

6 Responding to the text 1. Carter wrote: “I preferred to protect my legs with long trousers.” Why was this necessary? Carter needed to protect his legs from the flies and bees, and also because the poison would stick to his legs.

7 Responding to the text 2. Was this a comfortable job? Why or why not? How do you think Carter felt about it? This was not a comfortable job. Besides the flies, the bees, and sticky poison, Carter’s pants would not fold at night, and needed to be washed separately. Carter did not like the job.

Why do you think this was an important formative experience for him? This job taught Carter about the responsibility and value of caring for the cotton plant, and the difficult work involved.

12 Reading: An Embarrassing Incident
Read the essay. What was the writer’s embarrassing incident? The writer kissed the friend’s grandfather’s hand, and then told the little boy not to hug and kiss the grandfather. The writer felt embarrassed because of a cultural misunderstanding.

13 Analyzing the student essay
1. What background information do you learn about the writer? Why is this information important to understand the story? The writer’s family and culture has strict rules for respecting grandparents. This is important information because we needed to understand the writer’s actions at the friend’s party.

2. What is the main event or action in the story? The main event of this story is when the writer meets the friend’s grandfather and kisses his hand to show respect. Then he stops the little boy who jumped on the grandfather’s lap.

3. What does the writer learn? The writer’s family and culture has strict rules for respecting grandparents. The writer learns that good manners are not always the same in different countries.
