Desertification

What is desertification? Desertification is the term used to describe the spreading of deserts. Soils lose the ability to hold moisture. Desertification is taking place in the sahel region in Northern Africa.

Causes of desertification Deforestation: Trees are cut down for farmland due to growing population. Trees are cut for fire wood.

Causes of desertification Animals overgrazing: Overgrazing on the land destroys the soil cover

Causes of desertification Global warming: Changes to patterns of rainfall

Solutions to desertification Overgrazing of land can be prevented by reducing the number of cattle Irrigation could make land suitable again for grazing cattle and farming

Solutions of desertification Shelter belts This is a line of trees planted to protect crops from the wind and to prevent soil erosion. This prevents soil from blowing away.
