PAC topology Single device type (unlike e.g. 15.4 “controller” mode) Any device could act as bridge to infrastructure but none has to Infrastructure access itself not specified by 802.15 Infrastructure availability: intermittent (in time) and sporadic (in devices) Smart phones are an example of ubiquitous access but ubiquity is not a general property of PAC deployments Access enables security without necessity of provisioning in the field Multi-hop relaying is required (and is a requirement) EZ, InterDigital

PAC interoperability Many 802.15.4 amendments include multiple modes Vendors select which mode(s) to implement Deployment is often in “closed systems”: same coordinator for all end devices Social use cases in 802.15.8-PAC imply that “universal interoperability” is desirable. Important “side” benefit: Universal interoperability helps with infrastructure access EZ, InterDigital

PAC security and user’s identity User’s Data: Confidentiality required for most applications E.g. at the level provided by cellular carriers Data integrity required for some applications (e.g. emergency notifications) User’s identity: User’s ID defined in terms of an application (e.g. a game handle) Multiple (per application) identities possible Prevent disclosure of user’s application identity over the air or to 3’rd parties (other than the application provider) System must prevent impersonation EZ, InterDigital

How could it work? PDs may be provisioned with shared secrets that allow them to form SOME level of connectivity, e.g. by group e.g. establish a secured relayed link to infrastructure PDs attempt to connect to application server where a user can establish his or her identity PDs obtain own as well as desired peer temporary ID’s for discovery Identity information needs to be cryptographically secure PDs also receive keys for data encryption, if needed ID’s, keys etc. retained through absence of infrastructure (for some time) ID is used for discovery EZ, InterDigital

Additional Requirements All PDs shall support (at least one) common communication mode The discovery identity (DID) of a PD is derived from higher layers PD relaying groups could be provisioned A PD could have multiple DID at the same time PDs may be pre-configured with DID e.g. for the purpose of relaying How to handle discovery and peering in the absence of higher layers DID is out of scope for 802.15.8-PAC (and could be provisioned and subject to user’s control) EZ, InterDigital
