Portable
If the device actively monitors its neighbourhood (e.g. auto-discovery) the device may appear to be mobile at the MAC layer even if the application is not operating
The Mobile – Portable difference is more grey than black & white
Mobile
Depending on the architecture of the infrastructure, the device may have two (or more) active links as part of the mobility function
Detailed technical discussion is needed on issues such as
Make-before-break
Terminal initiated handoff
Network initiated handoff
Etc.
The network architecture will be significantly different for point-to-point links and multiple access
