Warm-Up 2/27/17 and 2/28/17 Consider the picture of Yellowstone National Park. What stands out to you? Label everything as either living or nonliving. What connections/relationships between the various parts of the picture do you recognize?

Card Sort Organize the word and pictures in a way that makes sense to you.

What is Ecology? Ecology - the study of the interactions of organisms with one another and with their environment. Ecologist – a scientist who studies ecology

Habitat & Niche Habitat is the place a plant or animal lives that provides, food, water & shelter Niche is an organism’s total way of life; it’s role or job

Two Parts of an Ecosystem Biotic factors ...Twig The living parts of an ecosystem Ex.: plants, animals, fungi, Bio = living; life Abiotic factors...twig The nonliving parts of an ecosystem Ex: water, sunlight, oxygen, temperature, soil A = non; not; without

Twig What is an ecosystem

What are the biotic parts of this environment? The abiotic parts?

Levels of Organization In the body How are things organized in the body???

Eco Levels of Organization

Organism Single living thing Can survive on its own

Population A group of individuals of the same species that live together.

Community All the different populations of species that live together in an area –or- All of the living things (biotic factors) in an area

Ecosystems Made up of all the biotic (living) and abiotic (nonliving) factors that interact in a particular area. Examples: prairie, mountain stream, ocean, forest

Biome A large region with a similar climate, and specific plant and animal communities that have adapted to that climate Terrestrial (Land) Aquatic (Water) Tropical rainforest Marine (oceans) Savanna/Grassland Freshwater (rivers & lakes) Temperate Forest Estuary Desert Taiga Tundra Mountain

Biosphere The part of Earth where life exists The biosphere includes the top portion of Earth’s crust, all the waters that cover Earth’s surface, and the atmosphere that surrounds Earth.

Ecological Organization

Let’s Turn to the Left Side p.68 Add illustrations to your levels of organization graphic organizer. Be sure to include biotic and abiotic factors as needed

Card Sort Organize the word and pictures in a way that makes sense to you.

Situation Cards Read the card at your table and talk amongst yourselves about the situation. In a new notability note: Title it “Ecosystem Situation Card” Take a picture of your situation Answer the questions/make predictions for your situation Each card involves topics we will learn more about as the unit continues.
