1 Levels of Organization

2 Atom Smallest unit of Matter Examples: NONLIVING Carbon Atom
Oxygen Atom Nitrogen Atom NONLIVING

3 Molecule Smallest unit of a substance that retains its original properties Examples: Carbon Dioxide Caffeine Carbohydrates NONLIVING

4 Organelle A cell structure with a specific job Examples: NONLIVING
Ribosome Chloroplast Mitochondria NONLIVING

5 Cell The SMALLEST thing that meets ALL of the Characteristics of Life; performs all functions of life Examples: Plant Cell Animal Cell Bacterial Cell LIVING

6 Tissue A group of cells that work together to perform a common function Examples: Connective Tissue Muscle Tissue Nervous Tissue LIVING

7 Organ A group of tissues working together to perform a common function
Examples: Heart Liver Skin LIVING

8 Organ System A group of Organs working together to perform a common function Examples Digestive System Cardiovascular System Skeletal System LIVING

9 Organism A living thing made of many cells which are specialized to perform different functions necessary for the organism to live Examples: Grasshopper Human Starfish LIVING!!!

10 POPULATION a group of organisms of one species living in the same place at the same time that interbreed Produce fertile offspring Compete with each other for resources (food, mates, shelter, etc.) The next level is a population. A population consists of a single species living together and breeding. Give me an example of a population. Ex. large mouth bass living in Lake Meade. Beetles living under the same log. Here we have salmon spwning and two bears fishing.

11 Community - several interacting populations that inhabit a common environment and are interdependent. Next level is a community which is several populations living together and depending on each other. What does interdependent mean? An example of a community is shown here with the bear and the salmon. They both live in a common environment and the bear needs the fish for food? How does the salmon need the bear?

12 Ecosystem - populations in a community and the abiotic factors with which they interact (ex. marine, terrestrial)

13 Deciduous Forest, Coniferous Forest, Tundra, Freshwater, Marine
Biome- very large regions that contain a number of smaller ecosystems within them All ecosystems within a biome have similar climates (temperature, rainfall) & organisms Tropical Rainforest, Temperate Rainforest, Desert, Grassland, Savanna very Deciduous Forest, Coniferous Forest, Tundra, Freshwater, Marine Rainforest Biome

14 The highest level of organization
Biosphere - life supporting portions of Earth composed of air, land, fresh water, and salt water. The highest level of organization Lets review. Organisms make up populations, populations make up communities, communities and abiotic factors make up ecosystems, and all of the ecosystems make up the biosphere. From one to many and each depending on the other.
