Earliest signs of occupation seem to date from C7th/6 th BC. Origins may be Oscan (local Italian people), Etruscan or Greek with Samnite participation. Earliest part of the town in SW corner. A flourishing town by late C3rd BC. Loyal to Rome during Hannibals invasion. Fought against Rome in the Social Wars BC.

Besieged by Sulla and forced to surrender. Spared from destruction. Became a Roman colony – Colonia Cornelia Veneria Pompeiana. Governed by duumvirs and a town council. Damaged by an earthquake in AD 62. Rebuilding still in progress when the town was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79.
