5.  Pompeii may be the city most commonly linked to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 C.E., but the cataclysmic events of that year affected nearby towns just as violently: Herculaneum, Oplontis, Terzigno and others. Pompeii served as the cosmopolitan center for the seaside resorts on the Bay of Naples. Because of its northern location, residents of Herculaneum experienced the eruption much differently than did the inhabitants of Terzigno, Oplontis, and Pompeii further to the south.
