Rocks October 9, 2014

Rock a mixture of minerals, rock fragments, volcanic glass, organic matter, and other natural materials

Sediment Loose material: like tiny pieces of rocks, mineral grains from rocks, bits of shell and remains of living things that are moved by wind, water, ice, or gravity.

Rock Cycle The process that creates and changes rocks Shows how rocks can change from one type to another

Compaction The process where layers of sediments are pressed together to form rock

Cementation The process where sediments are held together by dissolved minerals produced when water moves through rock

Weathering The process where air, water, or ice breaks down rocks into smaller and smaller pieces

Erosion The movement of weathered material (Sediments)

Magma Melted rock under Earth’s surface

Exit Pass 1. Choose three words and use them in a sentence.

Types of Rocks IGNEOUS ROCKS SEDIMENTARY ROCKS METAMORPHIC ROCKS

Igneous Rocks: A rock formed from cooled and hardened magma or lava.

Sedimentary Rocks: A rock formed when sediments are pressed and cemented together, or when minerals form from solutions

Metamorphic Rocks: A rock that has been changed because of changes in temperature and pressure, or the presence of hot, watery fluids
