Evolution By David Caldwell

Lesson Objective I chose this topic because I’ve always been interested in why there is such a gap between what we know about evolution and what people believe.

Lesson Objective Only 40% of people accept the science of evolution, when we have more evidence to support it than we have evidence that the Roman Empire existed

Lesson Objective After completing this lesson students will understand three things What evolution is and what it is not What a theory is Examine the evidence of evolution.

Background Asked how and why are there so many species of animals/plants and discovered common ancestry. The theory of evolution has passed every conceivable for 150yrs

Background Today Evolution is the foundation of modern biology and the best explanation we have for the diversity of life.

What Evolution is Not... It does not say how life began It does not say how the universe started. It says nothing about whether or not there is a god or gods.

Evolution explains change in species over time... What is Evolution? Evolution explains change in species over time... Common Ancestry

Did Humans come from monkeys? NO! We evolved from a common ancestor...like cousins

Just a theory? If someone says: “evolution is just a theory:..they are not using the word (theory) as it is used in science.

What is a scientific theory? A scientific theory is a well substantiated explanation for a set of solid facts. Theories explain facts and include Laws. EX: the theory of gravity explains the facts of the laws of attraction.

Other Scientific Theories Theory of Gravity Germ Theory of Disease Atomic Theory Big Bang Theory

Why is Evolution so important? Evolution is the foundation of all modern biology and medicine. Understanding evolution has led to to breakthroughs in medicine as well as inform our knowledge of our past.

Basics of the Scientific theory of Evolution Species change over time. This is evolution. All species have a common ancestor Natural selection is the mechanism for change

Is Evolution True More evidence supports evolution than any scientific theory. If we made a comparison to history, we have more evidence for evolution than we do that the Roman Empire existed.

Evidence for Evolution...

Evidence for Evolution

Evolution...the fossil record Similar Structures

Evidence-Fossils Changes over time

Evidence-DNA

Evidence-Predictions building strong theories in science is about evidence and making testable predictions. (we can predict what we should find before we find it)

Testable Predictions... Based on what we now know, scientist can predict what type of fossil they will find in a location, dig for it and find it. this is how strong the evidence is and the ability to predict.
