Salem Public Schools The mission of the Salem Public Schools is to provide each student who enrolls with a sound education, which will prepare that student well for: personal growth, continuing formal and informal learning, productive work, and active, well-informed participation in self-government upon graduation. As understood by the Salem Public Schools, a sound education consists of a mastery of traditional basic skills, a higher level learning of the ways to lead a healthy, active life, and of the required curriculum. It also includes: acquiring the fundamental traits of respect for others, self-control, and having opportunities throughout the educational process for self-expression by acquiring skill in the creative arts, athletics and other aspects of a well- rounded life.

Bates Elementary School (K-5) School-Wide Goals: Building a foundation for literacy Enhancement of the arts Maximizing the potential of the whole child Providing a safe, friendly, and child centered community Support students with severe behavioral and emotional difficulties (three Therapeutic Support Classrooms)

Our Salem, Our Kids Caring for and challenging every kid, every day. Our schools have crucial work to do, but as we better understand the complex and varied needs of our students and families, we realize that our schools cannot do the work alone. The world is changing and our schools, city and community must work seamlessly together to ensure that all of our young people have the academic, social, emotional, and developmental supports to thrive in the 21st century. We are fortunate to live in a place that is rich with resources — community organizations, world-class medical care, a dynamic business community, artistic and cultural treasures, the waterfront and national park, and a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives. Our Salem, Our Kids strives to effectively align and expand our community resources to better serve all children. Our Salem, Our Kids is more than just a coordinated effort; it’s a movement. A movement to care for and challenge every kid, every day. www.oursalem.org
