Works Cited Review Time for some notes! Woo-hoo!

Works Cited What is a works cited? List of sources Appears at end of a writing (essay, book, etc.) Last page Separate page What is it used for? Documentation of sources that are used in writing What is put in a works cited? Any sources that are used in the writing Cannot include sources that do not appear in writing

Why Works Cited All sources are fully listed at the back of the paper Convenient for teachers and researchers Gets rid of repetitive information: Each source listed only once at the back of the paper Instead of every time used in the paper When using a quote OR paraphrase in your paper Only need a brief reference to Works Cited entry All information for that source can then be found on the Works Cited page.

Why do we need a Works Cited? Shows where facts and quotes were found Teachers can see and check that you did research Plagiarism IS a big deal If you don’t show sources you are “cheating” Mountain Pointe: you will receive a “0” on your project If caught a 2nd time you will be dropped from the class College: Dropped from class Possibly expelled from school

Sample Works Cited Page

Works Cited Format Font Times New Roman 12 point font 1 inch margins Double space Header: (top-right side in the header portion of the paper) last name page# (Rich 1) Heading (left side under the header): Name, Teacher, Class, Date

Works Cited Format Format the Header: Format the Page: MLA Format Double Spaced Format the Header: Insert Header (select Blank) Page # (top of page) – then type last name Home – Align right Format the Page: Home Paragraph Line Spacing: Double Check the “don’t add space between paragraphs of the same style” box

Works Cited Format Begin your Works Cited page on a separate page at the end of your paper. It should have the same one-inch margins and running header (last name & page number in the top right-hand corner) as the rest of your paper. 1 inch

Title Title the page Works Cited (do not underline the words Works Cited or put them in quotation marks) Center the words Works Cited at the top of the page. Works Cited

Works Cited Format Entries are listed in Alphabetical Order Alphabetize by author’s last name No author? List by “Title of Article” Listed by first word of the entry (not including articles such as: A, An, The)

Works Cited Format Use a “hanging indent” for each entry First line on left margin, second line indented one tab. Byatt, A. S. Babel Tower. New York: Random House, 1996. Print. * You may need to backspace then hit “enter” so that you can tab the second line without it automatically tabbing the first line.

Capitalization and Punctuation Capitalize each word in the titles of articles, books, etc Do not capitalize articles, short prepositions, or conjunctions unless one is the first word of the title or subtitle: Gone with the Wind, The Art of War, There Is Nothing Left to Lose

Capitalization and Punctuation Use italics for titles of larger works (books, magazines, name of the website) Use quotation marks for titles of shorter works (page on a website, poems, articles) Miller, J. Hillis. “Early Life.” Charles Dickens: The World and His Novels. Bloomington: U of Indiana P, 1958. 195-210. Print.

Capitalization and Punctuation Use a period to separate each piece of information Dickens, Charles. Bleak House. 1852-1853. New York: Penguin,1985. *This picture is not in any way affiliated with the information on this slide.

Things to Remember: Works Cited needs to be in alphabetical order by the first letter of each entry. Double-space EVERYTHING (no extra spaces between entries) Use Hanging Indent “Titles of Articles” are in quotation marks. Titles of Sources (Websites, Journals, Magazines, Books) are in italics EVERY ENTRY MUST HAVE A SOURCE!!! There should be two dates (copyright date & date you accessed) End information with a period.
