After Reading: Answer the following questions with a partner: 1.- Martin grew up in his father’s house. What other family members lived in the house with Martin? Martin’s grandmother, grandfather, Reverend AD Williams, Aunt Ida, Martin’s dad, ML and mom, his big sister Christine and his little brother AD. 2.- What are the benefits that Martin and his siblings have as a result of living with their grandmother and aunt Ida? The grandmother was always there to take care of them while their parents were often away from home. Grandmother and Aunt Aida also shared memories from childhood and read to them.

After Reading: Discuss the following questions with a partner: 1.- Who do you think decided that MLK and AD could no longer play with the boys whose parents owned the store? The boys’ parents. The boys had played together in the past, so they didn’t care that MLK and AD were black. The family soon moved away. 2.- According to MLK’s mother, why did people make laws like these? At the time they didn’t understand that everyone is equal.

After Reading: Discuss the following questions with a partner: 3.- Why did the adults shield (protect) the children from cruelty and injustice around them? They knew the children would be hurt by this cruelty.
