Urban Greening London 47%: Case Study

Learning Objectives Knowledge: what constitutes green space? Understanding: Why is London so green? Understanding: Why is it good to have green space? Understanding: How can we make London greener?

What is green space? Patios Parks Houses Gardens Factories Woodland Cemeteries There are lots of examples of green space in the UK. Some examples of green space include………

Why is London so green? Central London Parks: Royal parks preserved but now open to all Local parks: run by the council since 1800s when there was a concern about public health and fresh air. Suburban growth built on farmland in 1900s leading to many houses having gardens.

Why is green space good? Oxygen – London has 8 million people and 8 million trees Reducing global warming – takes in CO2 and gives out O2 Reducing the danger of flooding; trees absorb rainwater Habitats for animals – London has 13,000 species of animals People enjoy parks and they keep people healthy People grow their own food – London has 30,000 allotments

How can we make London even greener? Urban greening: Increase and protect green spaces in cities Individuals: feed birds in winter, don’t pave over gardens Large spaces: connect green spaces eg Curitiba. Encourages migration Garden Bridge in London across River Thames
