First we need to remember what Urban Greening is and what examples we have in Newcastle

8 How to make Newcastle Greener?
Small scale vs Large scale Small Scale Large Scale Newcastle council has encouraged its residents to preserve their own individual greenspaces, for example feeding birds during the winter and not paving over their gardens. Newcastle Allotment and Garden Fete – a city wide annual celebration of home grown garden produce. In its 15th year the Fete aims to educate people on the importance of maintaining green space. Newcastle’s Green Space Strategy (2004): No planning permission awarded for projects on greenbelt around city. £19 million in last 10 years in improving parks. The Green Gym: A programme to help people keep fit and preserve environment - volunteers’ plant trees, weed beds, trim hedges and clear unsightly areas to restore them for the local community to use

9 Using a case study, describe the strategies used to enhance green spaces in a UK city (4 marks)
Now we can compare two answers – which is best and why? Student A: A strategy used to enhance green space in a U.K. city I have studied is the planting of trees and foliage in urban areas. This is useful as it helps to reduce air pollution as the trees absorb excess Carbon. They also produce Oxygen which is a useful by product of photosynthesis. One final note is that it can help alleviate stress when in green areas which is a positive social factor. Student B: In Newcastle, a case study of mine, 3000 allotments have been allocated to help provide a surplus of green space. Also trees have been planted in public areas and £19 million has been spent on trying to improve green spaces. This has all contributed to a greener Newcastle. Student C: Newcastle has tried to enhance green spaces by utilising several strategies. First they have injected £19 million into trying to enhance the provision of Greenery in the city and this has resulted in 3000 allotments being available to use for the public. This is supported by the planting of more trees and plants across the city which helps to reduce air pollution and therefore enhance the quality and experience of these green spaces

10 Final Task Name some of the social challenges of Mumbai settlements
