Split-Level Architecture By:Kevin Wu

Low-Pitched Roof Overhanging Eaves Attached Garage

OVERVIEW The Split Level building style was an alternative to the common one-story Ranch house. This style of building features low pitched roof, overhanging eaves and horizontal lines of the Ranch. The homes added a two-story unit connected at mid-height to a one story section creating three staggered floor levels. This bifurcated floor layout reflected an interior planning theory that determined families needed three types of interior space: a noisy living and service area on the partially below grade level (represented by a family room and often a garage); the mid-level quiet living area (containing the living room, dining room and kitchen); and the upper level with the bedrooms.

Era/No. of Stories/Materials The style gained popularity during the mid-20th century and became popular from the 1950s present day The stacked split level has four or five short sets of stairs, and five or six levels. The split level has two or three short sets of stairs, and three or four levels. The split entry has two short sets of stairs (usually 5 or 6 steps per stairway) and is a one level improvement with a basement. A variety of wall cladding is used, such as brick and clapboard, and is often mixed with the brick relegated to the lower level. Attached garages, often partially below grade, are more characteristic of later construction
