Year 6 SATs Meeting Tuesday 6th February 2018

What are the SATs? KS2 SATs (Statutory Assessment Tests) are taken at the end of Year 6 and assess pupils on the curriculum taught throughout KS2. The tests are mandatory and form part of the National Curriculum assessment programme. All tests (excluding writing) are marked externally. Secondary schools use the results to set initial targets for the children. OFSTED use the SAT results as a key indicator of a school’s effectiveness. Children’s attainment and progress is reported in school performance tables. https://www.compare-school-performance.service.gov.uk/schools-by-type?step=default&table=schools&region=311&geographic=la&for=primary

When will they take place? Biennial Science sampling will take place in June 2018 but only selected schools will be involved. We will be informed in May if a sample of our children have been chosen.

English: Reading Comprehension The reading test consists of a single test paper with three unrelated reading texts. Children are given 60 minutes in total to complete the test, which includes reading the texts and answering the questions. 50 marks available in total. Questions are designed to assess the comprehension and understanding of your child’s reading. During the reading paper, your child’s inference and deduction skills are thoroughly tested. They will also be expected to answer questions on authorial choices, explaining why an author has chosen to use particular vocabulary, grammar and text features. Some questions are multiple choice or selected response; others require short answers and some require an extended response or explanation. English: Reading Comprehension

Example Questions: Retrieval

Example Questions: Understanding Vocabulary

Example Questions: Deduction

English: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar The SPaG test is made up of 2 papers Paper 1 is 45 minutes and requires short answer questions including some multiple choice. Children will be expected to apply their knowledge of grammatical terminology with the full range of punctuation also being tested. Paper 2 is a spelling test containing 20 words and lasting approximately 15 minutes. Marks for these two tests are added together to give a total for grammar, punctuation and spelling. English: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar

Paper 1 Example Questions: Written response

Paper 2: Spelling Test The spellings tested are based upon the Year 5 and 6 list of words. The children are tested on 20 words within the context of a sentence. As the sentences are read out to the children, they fill in the correct spellings on their copy of the text.

Writing is assessed differently to all other areas Writing is assessed differently to all other areas. There is no writing test. Instead, throughout the year: Teachers assess children’s writing in a range of different genres; • Children's grammar, punctuation and spelling skills will be assessed as part of their writing along with their creativity and writing style; • Schools will moderate their judgements with other local schools and may be moderated by the Local Authority. Paper 2 and 3: Reasoning (35 marks each) Two 40 minute tests which assess the children’s ability to solve problem solving and reasoning questions. All areas of Maths will be included in this paper: Place Value, calculation, Fractions, Decimals, Percentages, Ratio, Algebra and Shape, Space and Measures. Maths

Scaled Scores All test outcomes at KS2 will be reported as scaled scores which a maximum score of 120. The National (expected) is 100. Raw scores (the number of marks awarded for each subject) will be translated to scaled scores using a conversion table devised by the DFE. Any child achieving a scaled score of 100 or above in Maths, Reading and SPaG is said to be working at the expected standard. A scaled score of 110 and over indicates a child is working at ‘Greater Depth’

2017 Reading Conversion Table

Reporting of Results The SATs results will be included with the end of year reports. For each tested subject, you will receive a scaled scored and one of the following results: AS: National standard has been achieved NS: National standard has not been achieved. Greater depth results are not reported however, a scaled score of 110 or more would indicate Greater depth has been achieved. You will also receive a teacher assessment for the tested subjects as well as for Writing and Science. Greater depth results are reported in Writing.
