Our Peace March 25

Consider … Where do you go when you need some peace and quiet? Sometimes no matter where we go, we don’t feel peaceful. But … God’s peace helps us rise above our circumstances. Today we look at how God brought peace to Gideon

Listen for complaining. Judges 6:11-13 (NIV) The angel of the LORD came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. 12 When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, "The LORD is with you, mighty warrior."

Listen for complaining. "But sir," Gideon replied, "if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our fathers told us about when they said, 'Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?' But now the LORD has abandoned us and put us into the hand of Midian."

Focusing on Circumstances What is unusual about what Gideon is doing in these verses? Why was he behaving so strangely? Many Christians in our culture feel threatened by events around us. What kinds of things do we do in those situations?

Focusing on Circumstances Why is retreating from that which threatens or oppresses us an option that does not always bring a lasting solution? What assurance did the angel of the Lord give to Gideon?

Focusing on Circumstances How would you feel if God addressed you as "mighty warrior?" What words or phrases in the passage show lack of faith by Gideon? How can we replace fear with faith?

Listen for God’s responses. Judges 6:14-16 (NIV) The LORD turned to him and said, "Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian's hand. Am I not sending you?" 15 "But Lord," Gideon asked, "how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family." 16 The LORD answered, "I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites together."

Focusing on Shortcomings The angel ignored Gideon's questions … What did the angel instead tell Gideon? How can we understand the phrase “in this thy might”, “in the strength you have”? What resistance did Gideon offer? What assurance did the Lord repeat to challenge Gideon’s excuses?

Focusing on Shortcomings How do we recognize when God is calling us to a task? Why do personal shortcomings cause us to doubt that God can use us? What resources are available for us for accomplishing the task God calls us to?

Listen for Gideon’s surprise. Judges 6:22-24 (NIV) When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the LORD, he exclaimed, "Ah, Sovereign LORD! I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face!" 23 But the LORD said to him, "Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die." 24 So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it The LORD is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Focusing on God What was Gideon’s reaction to realizing with certainty he was in the presence of the Lord God? What words of assurance and blessing did the Lord speak to him? What are several ways we can understand the concept of peace?

Focusing on God How did Gideon respond to the message of the Lord? Where do you need peace in your life right now? How can our actions and attitudes demonstrate that we follow the God who is Jehovah-Shalom, our Peace?

Application Receive Jesus as your Prince of Peace. If you have never experienced God’s Peace, admit your sin, willingly turn from it, and turn to Jesus. You can simply verbalize your desire by asking Jesus to come into your heart and allow you to live in peace with God.

Application Enjoy true shalom in your relationship with God. If you have received Christ as Savior but are not experiencing wholeness, it may be that you are stuck in a cycle of sin and disobedience. Ask God to show you any areas of spiritual neglect and disobedience. Confess them, turn from them, and turn back to Him.

Application Live at peace with others. Jesus our Peace has broken down all dividing walls. Is there a broken relationship in your life that needs to be made whole? Go to that person in the power of Christ—the One who gives you peace— and seek forgiveness and reconciliation.
