Interventions/Campaigns III MIS 650 Project Seminar Interventions/Campaigns III Proof of Concept 17/11/2018 MIS 650 Proof of Concept

Definition Proof-of-Concept is an attempt to demonstrate that an idea (“concept”) is feasible within the realm that it is proposed. Example 1. A new kind of user interface is created. POC shows that users can use it. Example 2. A new way to think about data is designed. POC shows that DBMs can employ these concepts in their design work 17/11/2018 MIS 650 Proof of Concept

More… POC is in the design realm You can design a solution to a problem, a way of conceiving of something, a vocabulary, a new way to work or teach The method of POC depends on the realm of validity: Applying the solution Thinking about things Talking about things Working Teaching 17/11/2018 MIS 650 Proof of Concept

POC: General Process Immerse yourself in the discipline Understand the concepts in the discipline Demonstrate the novelty of your concept Provide a rationale for the area of validity Create a credible proof procedure Execute the proof procedure Document the procedure, analyze the results 17/11/2018 MIS 650 Proof of Concept

POC: Outcomes/Deliverable The concept, defined The application area, researched The proof procedure, documented* The concept, implemented (limited) The experience, documented * This is often the greatest contribution of the proof of concept. 17/11/2018 MIS 650 Proof of Concept

4. Practical Implementation General Procedure 2. Design criteria 3. Conceptual Design 1. Implementation criteria 5. Proof 4. Practical Implementation 17/11/2018 MIS 650 Proof of Concept

Assumptions Concept is developed to apply to a problem The problem is itself interesting, hard, or valuable in solution POC doesn’t care about effectiveness or efficiency This is not a campaign, but does resemble a case study The “proof” itself is only one item on the list of deliverables. 17/11/2018 MIS 650 Proof of Concept

Examples Database Structure M-commerce Game approach to teaching Faith-based science Strict constructionism in judiciary Others???? 17/11/2018 MIS 650 Proof of Concept

Variants Survey of thought in an area (can it be described and talked about?): lit survey “Run it up the flagpole and see who salutes” (can it be desired or sold?): market test Prototyping (can it be built?): production test Build-and-test (will it work?): product test Clinical experiment (prove it works) 17/11/2018 MIS 650 Proof of Concept
