8.1.1 Proof of concept prototypes 8.1.2 Prototypes for experimentation 8.1.3 Focusing your mind 8.1.4 Exploratory research 8.2 Constructing the prototype 8.3 Conclusion

2 Introduction A simplified program or system that serves as a guide or example for the complete system Have some of the characteristics of the complete system but are simpler to develop Concentrate on aspect that need to be studied Provides more solid basis for decisions than abstract description or design of the system In industry used to ensure that designed system conforms to users’ expectations/needs In research primary purpose is to provide simple but less abstract objects to study

3 8.1 The role of a prototype Prototyping is not research
8.1.1 Proof of concept prototypes After proposing a new concept, e.g. new model, a prototype may prove that the concept is valid, practical, feasible. Small part of research, but provides a nice, concrete way to conclude a project. 8.1.2 Prototypes for experimentation P/T used to determine facts about the proposed system. E.g. speed, user reactions, etc. as measured in field tests. Once again, the P/T itself does not contribute to research. It only acts as vehicle to collect research data.

4 8.1 The role of a prototype (continued)
8.1.3 Focusing your mind P/T concretising of conceptual ideas/models. Forces you to focus on details that might otherwise have been overlooked. Might point it flaws in the model Allows you to play around with alternatives. 8.1.4 Exploratory research Use the prototype that a proposed concept for one application domain is feasible in another. Chances to succeed with research are slim.

5 8.2 Constructing the prototype
Prototype are relatively simple to construct Have a limited life span Consider using a RAD tool to speed up development time – maintenance is not an issue. Consider carefully which aspects of the system may be left unimplemented.
