In this school, we believe: Everyone is a math person. Questions are really important. Math is about creativity and making sense. Math is about connections and communicating. Math is about learning not performing. Depth is more important than speed. Mistakes are valuable. Mistakes are where the new learning goes! JK Discuss / define growth mindset - Carol Dweck - psycologist at Standford U - Fixed Mindset - success is based on innate ability; a "fixed" theory of intelligence. Growth Mindset - success is based on hard work, learning, training. Jo Boaler - professor of math education - works to promote math ed - website called youcubed - week of inspirational math here in grades 3 - 5. importance of positive messages related to math. Belief that all students can learn math. It takes hard work, perseverance, and practice our teachers are adopting these ideas / impact on student learning / confidence

CB - throughout the school - morning meeting, all school meeting, throughout day.

Math Practice Standards JK- K – 12 – same all the way through grade 12 – how we want children to think mathematical and what habits we want them to develop. Not necessarily about a certain content standard or subject but teaching them how to think. As parents, you see these practice standards on the report card at each grade k - 5 we combined: reason abstractly and quantitatively - and - construct viable arguments models - and - tools

CB – your classroom teaching practice Visual that the kids see. Embed in daily practice. Listening to strategies of others, communicating ideas, using visual representation. Discuss math talks/congress – how does it raise student understanding. Entry point for all - personal growth.

Which Practice Standards were used in the Math Task? JK - this task Fractured Numbers begins a unit on Fractions in Grade 3 Problem solving – this task will not be easy for all. may have to grapple - what if she kept going. Precision - will be important - pieces the same size. Some students will guess the pattern but will need the model to check their ideas. Making use of structure - repeated pattern - what if she kept going Reasons and explains – work on their own but will need to share ideas with classmates in small group or whole group discussion. Models and uses tools- cutting or drawing shape Sees structure and generalizes - Low Floor High Ceiling – some students will just be able to cut and label/ others will see pattern and be able to make a conjecture General shortcuts CB - discusses how this is a typical lesson - presenting, students work, come together to reason and explain.

JK This task in contrast. Students can count and label but does not deepen their understanding. May not really understand the structure of a fraction. Does not allow for a student to extend their thinking or promote curiosity. it’s right or wrong - no room for explanation.

Supporting Your Child At Home Positive Math Discussions Growth Mindset Ask about their thinking. Draw a picture or model. Focus on strategies and understanding not speed. It’s ok to make mistakes. Utilize school resources for practice (teacher web links, etc.) CB Do not say – I don’t like math or I was never good at math. Math is not your strength Just haven’t learned it YET Can you tell me how you thought about that? open to multiple strategies Use concrete models Ask to see their strategies and have them explain – it may be different than how you learned – we go for the understanding and not the procedure.
