Welcome. My name is Ms. Sindel. We’ll be talking about what your Kindergarteners are learning in math, how they’re being taught, and what you can do to support them at home.

Math Practice Standards
Intended to develop “mathematical thinkers”
These are interwoven in all lessons and all grades
We’ll start with a quick overview of the Common Core Standards. The Common Core has a two-part focus. Each grade level has content standards which address the math topics like place value, operations, fractions, geometry, etc… These are the standards that teachers focus on when planning instruction. The Common Core also has Math Practice Standards. These standards are the same for all grades and pertain to all content standards. The goal of these standards to develop habits of mind, mathematical thinkers so that students develop number sense and understand how to manipulate numbers, not just follow certain steps to get an answer.

3. Math Content Strands Counting and Cardinality
Know number names and the count sequence.
Count to tell the number of objects.
Compare numbers.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Understand addition as putting together and adding to, and understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from.
Number and Operations in Base Ten
Work with numbers 11–19 to gain foundations for place value.
Measurement and Data
Describe and compare measurable attributes.
Classify objects and count the number of objects in each category.
Geometry
Identify and describe shapes (squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, hexagons, cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres).
Analyze, compare, create, and compose shapes.
These are the content strands specific to Kindergarten. In white are the strand topics and then some more specific objectives for each one. You’ll find these listed on your handout. The first strand, Counting and Cardinality, is unique to Kindergarten. This is the basis of number sense – not just knowing the numbers while counting but knowing what a numeral means and having a sense of its size relative to others.

Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
Model with mathematics
Use appropriate tools strategically
Attend to precision
Look for and make use of structure
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
These are the math practice standards, which you can also find on your handout. You can see that these are habits of good thinkers. We want all students to be doing these things, but each one gets a focus in different lessons.
The fourth standard, “Model with Mathematics” is especially important for Kindergarten as students use pictures, ten frames and number lines to show what numbers mean.

As I mentioned, Counting & Cardinality is a foundational strand unique to Kindergarten. Students have learning how to read, write and count numbers They are learning that the number of objects stays the same even if you put them close together or apart, in a line or random. I mentioned modeling earlier – as the picture shows, they are showing the number 8 in multiple ways.
This is the foundation of number sense. Using numbers on a number line gives students a sense of where it comes in the counting sequence and how it compares to other numbers. Using tallies and the ten frame begins to get students in the habit of grouping objects into helpful numbers – 5 and 10. As we’ll talk about in a few minutes, 10-frames are an important model in Kindergarten to lay the foundation for learning place value in our base 10 system.

Now that students are confident about counting and comparing numbers of objects, they will move into classifying objects and comparing within groups. You can see two example activities. Students may look at a group of objects and circle the objects that go together. They can then count those objects and compare how many. They may use a chart like the left to draw a picture or use tallies, as you saw before.

These two examples are from the content standards on classifying and counting data. They also pull in the math practice standards, as you can see. While classifying, students are reasoning, being precise, as well as modeling.

8. Ten Frames Tool and strategy Builds foundation for place value
One model that Kindergarten focuses on is the ten frame. This is a set of ten boxes that students fill in with circles to show a number. This is a strategy students use to visually understand quantity and comparative size as well as a tool for solving problems. Right now, students are using ten frames to show numbers. In the future they will use ten frames for larger numbers and for addition.

9. Today I’ll send you home with a ten frame made from an egg carton that you can use to practice at home. You can use any object with it; I’ve given you paper squares for today. You can write in the numbers or not.
