Surface Area of a Prism

What is Surface Area?

What is Surface Area? Surface area is the number of square units needed to cover a 3D object. The sum of the areas of all the faces of a 3D object.

How would you find the surface area of this cube? If this cube had a side length of 3cm, what would the surface area be? An important question to ask yourself is how many faces does a cube have. 3 cm 3 cm 3 cm

What does the net of this prism look like? 3 cm How many faces does it have? Which faces are the same, and what are their dimensions? Face A = Therefore … x 6 = 3 cm

How would you find the surface area of this rectangular prism? If this cube had a base of 5cm, a height of 4cm, and a width of 8cm, what would the surface area be? An important question to ask yourself is how many faces does a rectangular prism have? How many are the same?

What does the net of this prism look like? How many faces does it have? Which faces are the same, and what are their dimensions? Face A = Face B = Face C = Therefore … x 2 = + + = cm2

What about a triangular prism? How many faces does a triangular prism have? Are there any similar faces? If so, which one? What shapes could you find in a triangular prism? What area formulas will you need to find the surface area of the triangular prism? To find the SA, find the area of the triangle and multiply by the length or height of the prism.
