Accomplishments At age 6, his father died. His mother had to enter the workforce to support the family, leaving Harland to take care of his siblings. This is when he had to learn to cook. By age 7, he had mastered several local types of cuisines. In 1930 he began cooking for hungry travelers at his gas station. He invented the “home meal replacement” where he sold complete meals to busy families. He called it, “Sunday Dinner, Seven Days a Week”. In 1952 he was so confident in his fried chicken that he made it into a franchise. Less than ten years after he started the franchise he had 600 franchises throughout the U.S. and Canada. In 1964 Sanders sold his company for a staggering $2 million. He was later sued by the new owners for starting “Claudia Sander’s Dinner House” where his fried chicken was served. He traveled 250,000 miles per year visiting all his restaurants in more than 100 countries around the world. In 1980 he was struck by leukemia and died at the age of 90.
