Canadian Cancer Society Canvasser Information March 2018 Welcome to Canadian Cancer Society’s Product Training!

Who are we? Canada’s first cancer charity, founded in 1938 Back then, only 25% of those diagnosed with cancer survived 5 years after their diagnosis Today we are Canada’s Cancer voice committed to engaging and supporting all communities Today, 60% of those diagnosed with cancer survived 5 years after their diagnosis We are the only national charity that supports all Canadians with all cancers in communities across the country. We are a community based organization With over 130,000 caring and committed volunteers across Canada And supported by a passionate employee base in all of the provinces dedicated to accelerating the impact in cancer so more Canadians live more fully.

Our differentiation Our Mission Work We are Canada’s largest national charitable funder of research into all types of cancers We educate people on how to reduce their risk of cancer, and how some types of cancer can be found early through screening tests Our support services help people living with cancer and their loved ones at a time when they are scared and anxious We are a trusted source of information about all types of cancer We advocate to governments on important cancer-related issues and on behalf of those affected by cancer.

The impact we make

Our daily impact

Cancer facts 206,200 Canadians diagnosed with cancer in 2017 #1 810,045 Canadians were alive at the beginning of 2009 with a cancer diagnosed in the previous 10 years 1 in 2 Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetime #1 Cause of death by disease among children past infancy 1 in 4 Canadians will die from cancer. Cancer is the leading cause of death 60% The percentage of people with cancer who are alive five years after a diagnosis

Where the money goes Research: Dr. Annie Huang Discovered the most common brain tumor in infants comes in two forms One that can be cured with chemotherapy and another with a more aggressive treatment Developing a test to distinguish between forms for more personalized treatment Impact: Liam Diagnosed with kidney cancer at age 7 Underwent surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation Monthly donations lead to lifesaving research He is now cancer-free Can go back to being a kid (Liam left)

Daffodil key messages Daffodil Month is a national fundraising campaign held every April to raise money for the CCS to continue it’s work in the fight against cancer. Progress is being made. The overall cancer survival rate has increased from 25% in the 1940s to 60% today. Together, we are making an impact! With nearly 1 in 2 Canadians expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and a nearly 35% surge in cancer cases anticipated by 2030 due to our growing and aging population, now more than ever, we need your generous support. 55% of high-priority research projects went unfunded last year, we need your support to fund more research and save more lives in 2018. This April when you donate, proudly wear a daffodil as a sign of your commitment to the fight against cancer.

Canvasser kit Lanyard and name tag “Facing Cancer” or “Cancer? We are here for you” cards “Sorry we missed you” slips Daffodil pins Donation form- one time and monthly Donation envelopes Instructions Note: kit contents may vary by province

Arts and Science of Canvassing

Canvassing tips Be safe- canvass in the day time or early evening when it is light out, avoid carrying large sums of money, stay in the doorway and don’t go inside unless you know the homeowner. Be prepared to talk to the donor, answer questions or refer them to our Cancer Information Service: 1-888-939-3333. Tell your story and talk about the achievements of the Canadian Cancer Society. Make sure you fill out your paperwork carefully.

Canvassing tips Always wear your official identification name tag and introduce yourself as a Canadian Cancer Society volunteer.  Only canvass houses that are on your assigned route.  Revisit your neighbours that are not at home. Making at least one return visit can increase donations by 40% or more!  If no one is home when you call back, leave the leave-behind slip.  If you are collecting funds from your friends, family and/or workplace, keep your canvasser kit with you throughout the month of April.  If someone has questions about how the Society supports people with cancer and their families, give them a "Facing Cancer?" or the “Cancer? We are here for you” card with details about our support services and contact information to put them directly in touch with our knowledgeable staff.

Canvassing tips Before leaving home practice saying these messages in your own words (It really does help to say these words out aloud) "Hi, my name is (Your Name) and I live in this neighbourhood." "I'm doing this today for the Canadian Cancer Society because it is committed to fighting cancer and providing support to people living with cancer." (or tell your story) I'm wearing the daffodil pin to show my support for people affected by cancer. Will you give today to support people with cancer? Every donation makes a difference!" If they say yes, ask: “Can I sign you up for our monthly giving program?” Wait for response. “Or would you like to make a one-time donation?”

Credit Card Donations “Would you prefer a monthly donation?” If a donor would like to make monthly donations or a one time donation with a credit card, please do not collect their credit card number at the door. Instead… Give them the self mailing envelope, the donor will put their credit card and donation information in and mail it. OR Collect their contact information and amount in the form so Canadian Cancer Society volunteers can follow up to collect the donation information. Direct them to cancer.ca to make an online donation.

FAQ’s If they say...  I gave by mail / at an event / another way.  You can say...  Thank you, your support really makes a difference! If they say...  Where does my money go?   You can say...  Your gift will help the Canadian Cancer Society fights all cancers by funding outstanding cancer research, prevention and support programs.   If they say...  I need more information.  Give them a “Facing Cancer?” or a “Cancer? We are here for you” card. You can say...  You can learn more about how the Society is fighting back against cancer by visiting our website at cancer.ca or call 1-888-939-3333.

FAQ’s If they say...  What are you charging for the pin?   You can say...  We don't sell pins. I'm giving pins as a thank you to those making a donation today.    When they say...  Didn’t you come by recently?  You can say…   No. The Canadian Cancer Society only conducts a door to door canvass once a year in April. There may be other organizations that are going door to door, but the Canadian Cancer Society is the best partner in the fight against cancer because we have more impact against more cancers in more communities than any other cancer charity.  Would you consider making a donation to support our mission?
