Lesson Starter Teeth play an important role in DIGESTION; use your own words to describe the role of our teeth.

Importance of teeth in digestion We use our TEETH to grind down food, making it easier to swallow. This is a PHYSICAL CHANGE – although our food does not look the same as when we ate it, it is still what we put in.

Learning Intention To be able to explain the journey food takes through the digestive system. To be able to label the digestive system. To describe the role of the organs in the digestive system.

How do we get from this… …to this?

The Digestive System oesophagus (gullet, or food pipe) small intestine stomach large intestine anus

Step 1: Inside the Mouth Salivary glands Produces saliva Enzymes Lubrication

Step 2: Swallowing Oesophagus Tube to stomach Muscle

Step 3: Inside the stomach Stomach- acid Liver- bile Gall bladder- store bile

Step 3: Inside the stomach Stomach- acid Liver- bile -fat Gall bladder- store bile Pancreas- enzymes, carbs, fat, protein

Step 4: Intestines Small intestine 23.3ft long (approx) Absorbs nutrients

Step 5: Intestines Large intestine Colon- water and salt Rectum- signals brain for bowel movement

Step 6: Out of the body Anus Waste (faeces/poop)
