General Description A toe injury is a collection of blood under the nail or your toe that needs to be released. This damage occurs from toes getting a lot of pressure applied to the toe, resulting in torn-off or hematoma formation under the nail. (Pfeiffer & Mangus,2012)

Signs and Symptoms Pain Open sore Swelling Discoloration Deformity Difficulty walking See a doctor if the pain, swelling and discoloration continue for a while (2 or more days) of if the injury hurts to much to walk or wear shoes. (Mayor Clinic,2017)

Population Sports such as soccer, football, and lacrosse show a high risk of injury to the great toe on artificial surfaces. Sports aren’t the only cause of toe injuries either, some other causes include change in shoe gear, the range of motion of your big toe joint and even flat foot conditions (Podiatry network, 2017).

Treatment/Prevention Proper footwear helps reduce the risks of the injuries as well. Exercises for heel pain and tightness help a lot as well. Stretching the foot, ankle, and leg muscles every time before exercise. Watching out for any obstacles help too to reduce falls and injuries (Podiatry Network, 2017).
